ISM Students Make a Splash in SPE Asia - An Update

Two current ISM Petroleum Engineering students were invited to participate at the Society of Petroleum Engineering Student Paper Contest that was held in Bahrain (See related article below). 3rd year student Ms. Indira stood third at the 2005 SPE Asia-Pacific Student Paper Contest Undergraduate Division. Participation of ISM students at such international events bodes well for their future. The students participation was partly sponsored by certain ISMAANA members as well as other ISM alumni in addition to funds from SPE India.

ISM Alumni Elected to the NAE

Congratulations to Prof. Raja Ramani (Mining, '62) on his election to the National Academy of Engineering. Here is the citation (Courtesy: Mr. Srikanta Mishra):

Raja V. Ramani, Professor Emeritus, mining and geoenvironmental engineering, Pennsylvania State University, University Park. For improvements in the health and safety of miners through a better understanding of the nature and control of airborne particulates.

National Academy of Engineering Elects 74 Members and 10 Foreign Associates

WASHINGTON – The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 74 new members and 10 foreign associates, NAE President Wm. A. Wulf announced today. This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,195 and the number of foreign associates to 178.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest
professional distinctions accorded an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or
developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

ISM Students Make a Splash in SPE Asia

Two current ISM Petroleum Engineering students have been invited to participate at the Society of Petroleum Engineering Student Paper Contests being held in Bahrain and Kuala Lumpur. Final year student Mr.Manish Choudhary and 3rd year student Mr. Vivek Swami have both been selected to present their papers at SPE Bahrain Regional Conference in March 2005. Manish recently represented India at the World Energy Congress, youth Syposium held in Sydney between 5-10 September. Vivek has also been selected for participation in the 2005 SPE Asia-Pacific Student Presentation/Paper Contest Undergraduate Division going to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on 7 april 2005. Their participation is dependent on their being able to collect required funds for their travel.

Tragic demise of Dhanbad alumnus

Tragedy strikes again with the untimely death of Vishal Misra (1993 Mining) in a Mining accident in the Jamadoba mine of Dhanbad. He is survived by his wife and a four-year old daughter.
May God Bless his Soul and give his family the strength to live their lives.
